Music Workstations sind elektronische Musikinstrumente, die aus einem Soundmodul, einer Klaviatur und verschiedenen weiteren Komponenten, wie Sequenzern, Effektgeräten, Samplern oder Drumcomputern bestehen. Eine Workstation soll es einem Musiker ermöglichen, mit einem einzigen Gerät ein ganzes Stück zu produzieren. Die erste Workstation war der Korg M1, der im Jahr 1988 auf der Frankfurter Musikmesse vorgestellt wurde.[1] Zu dieser Zeit war softwarebasierte Musikproduktion noch nicht weit verbreitet; die Neuerung bestand darin, verschiedene Hardwarekomponenten in einem einzigen Gerät zusammen zu fassen.

Die Klänge werden in Echtzeit gesteuert, in der Regel über Potentiometer oder Fader. Die Tonerzeugung beruhte häufig auf PCM-Samples, die sich auf ROM-Speicherbausteinen befinden und nicht selbst bearbeitet werden können.[2] Heutige Workstations haben meistens auch eingebaute Sampler; seit 2001 ist teilweise auch das Einbinden von eigenen WAV-Dateien möglich.[1] Oft können Workstations noch über so genannte Expansionboards erweitert werden.

Wichtige Hersteller von Workstations sind Korg, Roland und Yamaha.
