Pok ta Pok

Ulama (oder Pok-ta-Pok) war ein Ballspiel verschiedener indianischer Kulturen in Mittelamerika und eine Variante des sogenannten Mesoamerikanischen Ballspiels.

Geschichte

Es wurde dort schon vor ca. 3000 Jahren gespielt und kann als Vorläufer des heutigen Fußball- und des Basketballspiels angesehen werden. Das Wort Ulama kommt vom Nahuatl-Wort ullamaliztli (Ballspiel). Der Name Pok-ta-Pok leitet sich von dem Geräusch, das der Ball beim Aufspringen macht, ab. Gespielt wurde das Spiel von den Olmeken, den Azteken, den Mixteken und den Maya. Man hat über 600 Spielfelder aus allen Epochen der mexikanischen Geschichte gefunden, die von der Popularität des Spiels über einen langen Zeitraum hin zeugen. Die Regeln können anhand von Darstellungen auf Gefäßen, plastischen Objekten und Steinmonumenten fragmentarisch rekonstruiert werden. Die Mannschaften bestanden aus vier Spielern. Ziel des Spiels war es, einen Kautschukball mit der Hüfte, den Oberschenkeln oder den Ellenbogen durch ein Steintor oder einen Ring zu befördern. Der Einsatz von Händen und Füßen war verboten. Der Kautschukball wog etwa 1,5 bis 3 Kilo. Die Spielfelder waren dabei oft in Form einer künstlichen Schlucht angelegt, welche das Tor zur Unterwelt symbolisieren sollte.

Eine Legende besagt, dass die Sieger des Spiels geopfert wurden, da dies als große Ehre galt (siehe dazu auch den Opferkult der Azteken). Dies ist jedoch in der Wissenschaft umstritten.

Sonstiges

Als „Offizieller Beitrag des Kunst- und Kulturprogramms zur FIFA WM 2006“ gastierte eine mexikanische Pok-ta-Pok-Truppe in Deutschland.
