Coryphantha ist eine Pflanzengattung aus der Familie der Kakteengewächse (Cactaceae). Der botanische Name der Gattung leitet sich vo den griechischen Substantiven „κορυφή“ (koryphe) für Gipfel und „ανθσς“ (anthos) für Blüte ab. Er verweist auf die in der Nähe der Triebspitze erscheinenden Blüten.

Beschreibung

Die Pflanzen der Gattung sind kugelig bis länglich und eher wenig sprossende Warzenkakteen. An blühfähigen Exemplaren ist auf der Oberseite der Warze eine von der Areole zum Körper durchgehende Furche zu erkennen. Die roten, gelben oder weißen Blüten erscheinen zentral in der Nähe des Vegetationszentrums. Typisch für Pflanzen dieser Gattung ist, das sie ihr Aussehen kontinuierlich verändern vom Sämling bis zur Altpflanze. Auch gibt es Pflanzen der gleichen Art mit und ohne Mitteldorn. Des weiteren bilden einige Coryphanten extraflorale Nektardrüsen aus.

Verbreitung und Systematik

Der Großteil der Pflanzen der Gattung ist in Mexiko verbreitet. Einige Arten kommen aber auch in den südlichen Bundesstaaten der USA, Texas, New Mexiko und Arizona, vor. Sie wachsen an den natürlichen Standorten in Gesteinsschutt, vergesellschaftet mit einer lockeren Begleitvegetation.

Die Gattung wurde 1868 von Charles Lemaire mit der Typusart Coryphantha sulcata aufgestellt.^[1]

Reto F. Dicht und Adrian D. Lüthy untergliederten 2001 die Gattung in zwei Untergattungen mit mehreren Sektionen. Die Gattung umfasst folgende Arten:^[2]
