Das SAS Institute ist ein 1976 gegründetes, weltweit operierendes Softwarehaus in Privatbesitz mit Sitz in Cary, North Carolina, USA mit über 2,43 Mrd US$ Jahresumsatz. Damit ist das SAS Institute das größte private nicht börsennotierte Softwareunternehmen und größter Business-Analytics-Anbieter weltweit. Der Name SAS stand ursprünglich als Abkürzung für Statistical Analysis Systems. Konkurrenzprodukte sind u.a. Business Objects (SAP), Hyperion (ORACLE), Microsoft SQL Server / Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (Microsoft) und Cognos (IBM).

Die deutsche Hauptniederlassung befindet sich in Heidelberg, das Hauptbüro für Österreich in Wien, und das Hauptbüro für die Schweiz in Wallisellen in der Nähe von Zürich.

SAS stellt Software für statistische Analysen, Data-Mining, Data-Warehouse-Lösungen und Business-Intelligence einschließlich OLAP-Servern und Komponenten her. Darüber hinaus entwickelte SAS von Anfang an Software für das IT-Management, die heute für das IT-Performance Management, IT Capacity Management, IT Scorecard und das IT Controlling eingesetzt wird. Dadurch werden Anforderungen, die z. B. aus ITIL resultieren (z. B. Service-Management usw.), abgedeckt. Des Weiteren bietet SAS heute spezielle Lösungen für praktisch alle Industriezweige und Unternehmensbereiche.

Neben einem eigenen Datenbankformat existieren auch Schnittstellen zu diversen anderen Datenquellen (Datenbanken, Applikationen, FlatFiles, XML-Dateien usw.).

Programmiert wird SAS in eigenen Programmiersprachen, vor allem in Base SAS. Programme in C und Java können eingebunden werden. SAS Software läuft unter fast allen gängigen Hardwareplattformen.

Für PCs unter Windows und Mac OS X wird das integrierte System JMP angeboten.

SAS bietet als Arbeitgeber zahlreiche Extras: Die Firma subventioniert neben ihrer Kantine einen Fitnessclub, Massagen, Friseur, Kinderbetreuung, Sportplätze, Joggingpfade, eine Schönheitsfarm, eine Work-Life-Balance-Beratung und eine Klinik. Es gibt keine Großraumbüros.[2]
