The United Jazz + Rock Ensemble

Das United Jazz + Rock Ensemble (abgekürzt United oder UJRE) war eine Jazzrock-Band, die von 1977 bis 2002 bestand und Größen des Jazz und Jazzrock aus ganz Europa vereinigte. Die Band entstand aus einer Gruppe von Musikern, die 1974-1975 in einer Fernsehsendung des Süddeutschen Rundfunks auftrat. Dabei waren bereits fast alle der späteren Mitglieder von United vertreten.

Gründungsmitglieder waren außerdem Eberhard Weber (Bass, anstelle von King), Kenny Wheeler (Trompete, anstelle von Baldauf), Charlie Mariano (Saxophon, Flöten und Nagaswaram, anstelle von Lauer). Außerdem spielten zwischenzeitig Johannes Faber (Trompete), Uli Beckerhoff (Trompete), Thorsten Benkenstein (Trompete) und Peter O’Mara (Gitarre) mit.

In seiner mit sechs Bläsern annähernden Big-Band-Besetzung spielte das Ensemble überwiegend Eigenkompositionen. Die Stilistik der Stücke ist vor allem dem Jazz und Rock verbunden, aber auch andere Musikstilrichtungen sind vertreten. Insbesondere Charlie Mariano brachte durch seine Erfahrung mit indischer Musik gelegentlich ethnische Einflüsse in das Repertoire der Band.

Die einzelnen Mitglieder der Band hatten vor der Gründung und parallel zur Existenz des United Jazz + Rock Ensemble erfolgreich Musik in unterschiedlichen Stilrichtungen gemacht, weshalb das UJRE auch "Band der Bandleader" genannt wurde. Die fachlich herausragende künstlerische Stellung der Bandmitglieder wird auch dadurch belegt, dass einige von ihnen an (Musik-)Hochschulen lehrten bzw. noch lehren.

Diese prägende Vielfalt aus verschiedenen Musikern, von denen jeder eigene Kompositionen - oft aus der Arbeit mit eigenen Ensembles - zum Repertoire beisteuerte, sorgte für viel Abwechslung und gab der Band einen gewissen experimentellen Touch.

In der langen Schaffensphase der Band wurden 14 Alben veröffentlicht, alle unter dem Label mood records, das von Wolfgang Dauner, Werner Schretzmeier, Albert Mangelsdorff, Ack van Rooyen, Volker Kriegel und Christoph Wertz gegründet worden war.

Im Jahre 2002 kam mit der "Farewell Tour 2002" der Abschied der Gruppe von gemeinsamen Auftritten. Dieses war nicht zuletzt durch die Parkinson-Erkrankung von Barbara Thompson begründet.
