Barro Colorado Island ist eine künstliche Insel im Gatúnsee, einem Teil des Panama-Kanals, gelegen im zentralen Landesinneren von Panama.

Die 15 km² große Insel ist vollständig von tropischem Regenwald bedeckt, und wird bis heute entsprechend bilateraler Verträge von der Smithsonian Institution verwaltet; sie gilt als das besterforschte tropische Ökosystem weltweit.

Barro Colorado ist als Naturdenkmal geschützt. Die Insel beherbergt lediglich einen Polizeiposten und eine Forschungsstation des Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI), auf der ganzjährig rund 50 internationale Wissenschaftler arbeiten.
