Walter Brueggemann

Walter Brueggemann (* 1933 in Tilden (Nebraska)) ist ein US-amerikanischer Theologe, dessen wissenschaftlicher und publizistischer Schwerpunkt auf dem Alten Testament liegt.

Leben

Brueggemanns Vater war evangelischer Geistlicher in Tilden. Brueggemann lebt heute in Cincinnati; er ist ordinierter Pfarrer der United Church of Christ.

Brueggemann erreichte 1955 am Elmhurst College einen Artium Baccalaureus im Hauptfach Soziologie und 1958 einen Bachelor of Divinity am Eden Theological Seminary; er wurde 1961 in alttestamentlicher Theologie am Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York promoviert und 1974 in Erziehungswissenschaften an der Saint Louis University. Er war von 1961 bis 1986 Professor für Altes Testament am Eden Theological Seminary und wurde danach Professor für Altes Testament am Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur in Georgia, wo er 2003 emeritiert wurde.^[1]

Brueggemann ist ein Verfechter und Vertreter der rhetorischen Exegese (rhetorical criticism) bei der Bibelauslegung. Er hat zahlreiche Bücher und hunderte von Zeitschriftenaufsätzen verfasst und verschiedene Kommentare zu Büchern der Bibel bearbeitet. In den 1990er Jahren beteiligte sich Brueggemann an Bill Moyers Fernsehserie zum Buch Genesis des Fernsehsenders PBS.^[2]
