Abraham Cohen Herrera

Abraham Cohen (de) Herrera, auch Abraham Irira, christlicher Taufname Alonso Nunez de Herrera, ( * um 1570; † 1635 oder 1639 in Amsterdam) war ein Religionsphilosoph und Kabbalist.

Der Geburtsort von Herrera ist nicht bekannt. Nach einigen Angaben soll er in einer angesehenen Marranenfamilie in Lissabon geboren sein.[1] Später hielt sich Herrea und seine Familie in Florenz auf. Von dort ging er nach Marokko und geriet in den Diensten von Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur in englische Gefangenschaft. In den 1590er Jahren lebte er nach seinen Angaben in Ragusa, wo er bei Israel Sarug die lurianischen Kabbala studierte. Nach dieser Zeit zog er nach Amsterdam und kehrte zum normativen Judentum zurück. Hier verfasste er mehrere Werke in Spanisch, die später auch ins Hebräische übersetzt wurden. Besonders Aufsehen erweckte sein Buch Puerta del cielo (Sha’ar hash-shamajim, hebräisch 1655 von Isaac Aboab da Fonseca), eine neuplatonische Exposition der lurianischen Kabbala, die in der Lateinischen Übersetzung, von Christen viel gelesen wurde.

Nach seinem Tod wurde er als Mitglied der sephardischen Gemeinde in Amsterdam auf dem nahe der Stadt gelegenen Friedhof Beth Haim in Ouderkerk beigesetzt.[2]
