Canadian Solar wurde 2001 von Dr. Shawn Qu gegründet und produziert seitdem Standard- und Spezialmodule. Der Hauptsitz des Unternehmens ist in Kanada und führt alle Produktionsaktivitäten in China durch. Canadian Solar hat mit dem Bau einer weiteren Produktionsstrecke begonnen. 2008 hatte Canadian Solar eine Modulkapazität von 600 MW, die 2009 auf über 800 MW ausgebaut werden sollte. Außerdem ist das Unternehmen seit dem 19. August 2011 Sponsor des Fußballvereins Hannover 96.
