International Launch Services (ILS) ist ein amerikanisch-russisches Joint Venture, das für die exklusive weltweite kommerzielle Vermarktung der Proton-Rakete zuständig ist. Auch die zukünftige russische Neuentwicklung Angara soll von ILS vermarktet werden.[4]

Geschichte

ILS wurde 1995 als privates Raumfahrtunternehmen von Lockheed Martin, Khrunichev und Energia zur kommerziellen Vermarktung der amerikanischen Atlas V und der russischen Proton Trägerrakete gegründet.[5]

Mit dem Start von Astra 1F am 9. April 1996 wurde der erste Satellit unter Führung von ILS erfolgreich in den Orbit gebracht.[2]

Im September 2006 gab Lockheed Martin bekannt, seine Anteile an ILS verkaufen zu wollen. Am 11. Oktober 2006 wurden die ILS-Anteile von Lockheed Martin schließlich an Space Transport Inc. verkauft. ILS hatte zu diesem Zeitpunkt bereits 37 erfolgreiche kommerzielle Proton-Starts abgewickelt. Mit dem Ausstieg von Lockheed Martin wurde auch die Vermarktung der Atlas V an Lockheed Martin Commercial Launch Services übertragen.[6][7]

Im Mai 2008 übernahm schließlich Khrunichev Research and Production Space Center alle Anteile von Space Transport Inc..

Gegenwart und Zukunft

Haupteigner von International Launch Services ist derzeit Khrunichev Research and Production Space Center. Seit Firmengründung wurden 65 Proton-Starts unter Führung von ILS durchgeführt (Stand 22. Mai 2011).[8]

Gegenwärtig vermarktet ILS ausschließlich die Proton-Rakete. Nach abgeschlossener Entwicklung der Angara, deren Erstflug für 2013 geplant ist[9][10], soll auch diese Rakete exklusiv durch ILS vermarktet werden.[11]
