Das Windows Imaging Format (WIM) ist ein dateibasiertes Disk Image bzw. Archiv-Format, entwickelt von Microsoft für Windows Vista, Windows 7 und Windows Server 2008 (für deren Installation es auch verwendet wird).

Im Gegensatz zu gewöhnlichen Disk Image-Formaten für CD/DVD (wie .ISO oder .CUE/.BIN) bildet eine WIM Datei keine physikalischen Sektoren ab, sondern enthält wie ein Archiv eine Menge von Dateien + Metadaten, die ein Dateisystem konstituieren (dateibasiertes Disk Image).

Vorteile

• unabhängig von physikalischen Sektoren: Hardware-unabhängig, kompakt;
• unterstützt Datenkompression (LZX-Algorithmus) + Single Instance Storage;
• eine WIM Datei kann mehrere Images enthalten (zum Beispiel unterschiedliche Versionen), wobei identische Dateien nur einmal für alle gemeinsam gespeichert sind (Single Instance Storage);
• WIM-Images lassen sich live mounten und so leicht bearbeiten & verändern
• ein WIM-Image kann in mehrere Teilarchive gesplittet werden (Dateiendung .SWM)

ImageX

ImageX ist ein Kommandozeilen-Programm zum Erstellen, Mounten und Bearbeiten von WIM-Images. Es ist Teil des Windows Automated Installation Kit (WAIK) von Microsoft.

ImageX Kommandozeilen-Optionen (Auswahl):

/delete	Deletes an image from a WIM file with multiple images
/dir	Displays a list of files and folders within a volume image
/mount	Mounts an image to the specified directory (read-only access)

/commit	Commits the changes made to a mounted WIM
/unmount	Unmounts image
/apply	Restore volume image to the specified drive
/compress	Set compression type to none, fast, or maximum
/verify	Verifies duplicate and extracted files
/split	Split WIM file into multiple .SWM parts (read-only)
/?	Returns valid command-line parameters for ImageX
