Coomassie violet R200 ist ein Triphenylmethanfarbstoff. In der Textilindustrie dient er als Farbstoff. Außerdem wird er in den Biochemie zum Anfärben von Proteinen bei der Polyacrylamid-Gelelektrophorese benutzt.

Name

Der Name des ursprünglich als Wollfarbstoffes entwickelten Coomassie-Brillant-Violett stammt von der afrikanischen Stadt Kumasi in Ghana. Er wurde zur Erinnerung an die britische Besetzung der damaligen Ashanti-Hauptstadt Coomassie – heute Kumasi – im Jahr 1896 gewählt. Coomassie® ist eine registrierte Marke der Imperial Chemical Industries.
