Henry Havelock Ellis (* 2. Februar 1859 in Croydon; † 8. Juli 1939 in Hintlesham, Suffolk) war ein britischer Sexualforscher, Sozialreformer und Fabianer.

Leben

Havelock Ellis interessierte sich bereits in jungen Jahren für die wissenschaftliche Erforschung sexueller Probleme. Er studierte Medizin und promovierte, hatte aber nie eine ärztliche Praxis. Ellis widmete sich bevorzugt dem Schreiben und leistete im Laufe der Jahre wichtige Beiträge zum besseren Verständnis der menschlichen Sexualität.

Studies in the Psychology of Sex, das er zwischen 1896 und 1928 in sieben Bänden veröffentlichte, gilt als sein wichtigstes Werk. Bereits als der erste Band in England erschien, wurde er von Kritikern als obszön bezeichnet und rief alsbald die Gesetzeshüter auf den Plan. Ein Buchhändler wurde daraufhin angeklagt, welcher sich zu seiner Verteidigung auf den wissenschaftlichen Wert des Werks berief. Der Richter verwarf jedoch diese Argumentation mit der Begründung es handle sich nur um einen Vorwand, um eine schmutzige Publikation zu verkaufen. Die Folge dieses Skandals war, dass das Werk in England und den USA nicht legal zu erhalten war und der Öffentlichkeit bis 1935 vorenthalten blieb. Nur Ärzten war es gestattet ein Exemplar zu erwerben.

Dennoch nahm der Ruf und Einfluss des Autors in vielen Ländern zu. Er korrespondierte mit Freud, der einige seiner wissenschaftlichen Begriffe übernahm und er beteiligte sich aktiv an der Bewegung zur Sexualreform. Er war einer der entschiedensten Verfechter allgemeiner Sexualerziehung und vertrat die für seine Zeit neue Auffassung, dass Schamhaftigkeit bzw. Anstand ("modesty") und Nacktheit sich nicht ausschließen, sondern viele Kulturen, in denen öffentliche Nacktheit nicht tabuisiert ist, dennoch einen ausgeprägten Sinn für Scham/Anstand haben. Die naturistische Bewegung (FKK) bezog sich teilweise auf Ellis.

Ellis galt als Vertreter der sexuellen Befreiung und unternahm Selbstversuche mit Meskalin. Er trat 1883 der Fabian Society bei und pflegte Freundschaften unter anderem zu Olive Schreiner.
