Hipgnosis

Hipgnosisgründer Storm Thorgerson im Jahr 2010

Hipgnosis war ein britisches Designerunternehmen. Es wurde 1968 von Storm Thorgerson (* 1944 in Potters Bar) und Aubrey Powell, genannt Po, gegründet. Zunächst erstellte man Cover für Pink Floyd und andere Künstler, die bei dem Plattenlabel Harvest unter Vertrag waren. Das hauptsächliche Element bei der Covergestaltung war die Fotografie. Der Unternehmenssitz war in der Demark Street in London.

Zu den Beschäftigten zählte ab 1974 auch der Fotograf Peter Christopherson, der später als Musiker bei Throbbing Gristle, Psychic TV und insbesondere Coil bekannt werden sollte. 1983 verließ Storm Thorgerson das Unternehmen, um als eigenständiger Künstler weiterzuarbeiten. Hipgnosis ging im Jahre 1985 in Konkurs. Storm Thorgerson lebt heute im Norden von London zusammen mit seiner Frau und seinen zwei Kindern und arbeitet weiterhin als freischaffender Grafikdesigner.

Vor allem in den 1970er Jahren setzte Hipgnosis Maßstäbe bei der innovativen Gestaltung des Erscheinungsbilds von Rock- und v.a. Art-Rock-Alben, die hier zu einer eigenen Kunstform erhoben wurde. Dieses Verdienst wirkt – in Kompendien und Rock-Lexika – bis heute nach.
