Isaac Breuer

Isaac Breuer (* 18. September 1883 in Pápa, Ungarn; † 10. Juli 1946 in Jerusalem, Israel) war ein deutschstämmiger Philosoph und ein bedeutender Vertreter des orthodoxen Judentums.

Leben

Breuer, ein Enkel von Samson Raphael Hirsch, wuchs in Frankfurt auf, wo sein Vater Rabbi und Leiter einer talmudischen Lehranstalt war.

Breuer studierte in Marburg Jura und u.a. bei Hermann Cohen Philosophie. Bis 1936 war er in Frankfurt als Rechtsanwalt tätig, ehe er nach Palästina auswanderte.

Neben seiner juristischen Tätigkeit veröffentlichte Breuer viele Schriften, in denen er sich mit jüdischen philosophischen aber auch politischen Themen auseinandersetzt. Dabei sah er sich in der Nachfolge seines Großvaters, allerdings geprägt durch seine Auffassung der kantianischen Philosophie.

Das durch die Tora offenbarte Gottesgesetz ist Grundlage der jüdischen Religion und Nation. Breuer trat zwar für einen jüdischen Staat ein, allerdings verweigerte er sich dem Zionismus, da dieser seiner Meinung nach eine Säkularisierung und Aufgabe der jüdischen Eigenständigkeit darstellt. Er war bis zu seinem Tod ein bedeutender Vertreter der nichtzionistischen jüdischen Orthodoxie.

Er war Mitglied der Kant-Gesellschaft.
