Andrew Jefferson Offutt (* 16. August 1934 in Taylorsville, Kentucky, USA[1]) ist ein US-amerikanischer Autor von Fantasy- und Science-Fiction-Literatur. Er veröffentlicht seine Werke teilweise unter Variationen seines bürgerlichen Namens, vornehmlich als Andrew J. Offutt, teilweise unter den Pseudonymen John Cleve, Jeff Douglas oder J. X. Williams.[2] Gelegentlich ist sein Name auch vollständig in Kleinbuchstaben als andrew j. offutt geschrieben.[3][4]

Leben
Offutt wuchs in einer Blockhütte in der Kleinstadt Taylorsville im Spencer County auf. Später siedelte er nach Louisville um und studierte mittels eines Stipendiums der Ford Foundation an der dortigen Universität. 1955 wurde ihm der Bachelor of Arts im Fach Englisch verliehen.
Während seiner Arbeit in Lexington lernte er Jodie McCabe kennen, die er 1957 heiratete. Chris Offutt, ältester der vier gemeinsamen Kinder, ist heute ebenfalls als Schriftsteller bekannt. Das Ehepaar Offutt, mittlerweile über fünfzig Jahre verheiratet, lebt im Rowan County im US-Bundesstaat Kentucky.[1]
Werk
Offutts erste Publikation war die Kurzgeschichte And Gone Tomorrow, die 1954 in der US-amerikanischen Science-Fiction-Zeitschrift If veröffentlicht wurde. Nach dem Verkauf der Kurzgeschichte Blacksword an das Magazin Galaxy konzentrierte er sich zunehmend auf die Schriftstellerei. Mit Evil Is Live Spelled Backwards erschien 1970 sein erster Roman.
Für den Romanzyklus Thieve's World (deutscher Titel: Diebeswelt) von Robert Lynn Asprin und Lynn Abbey schuf er die Figur Hanse und beschrieb sie zwischen 1987 und 1993 in drei Romanen. Zudem verfasste er Romane über Conan und Cormac Mac Art, beide Charaktere des Schriftstellers Robert E. Howard.
Zwischen 1976 und 1978 war Offutt Präsident der Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America.[1] Ende der 1970er Jahre gab er unter dem Titel Swords Against Darkness fünf Anthologien mit Kurzgeschichten weniger bekannter Autoren heraus.
Unter bis zu zwölf verschiedenen Pseudonymen schrieb Offutt eine Vielzahl erotischer Romane, darunter die von 1982 bis 1984 entstandene Spaceways-Reihe, die unter dem Autorenpseudonym John Cleve publiziert wurde.
