Lorraine Elizabeth Adie

Lorraine Copeland (* 1916 als Elizabeth Lorraine Adie) ist eine schottische Prähistorische Archäologin, mit dem Spezialgebiet Altsteinzeit im Nahen Osten. Ihr Ehemann war der ehemalige Glenn Miller-Trompeter Miles Copeland junior († 14. Januar 1991), mit dem sie vier nicht minder prominente Kinder hat: Miles Copeland III, Musikproduzent und Gründer von „I.R.S. Records“, Ian Copeland, Musikagent und ’Wegbereiter’ des New Wave in den USA († 23. Mai 2006), Stewart Copeland ist der Gründer und Schlagzeuger von „The Police“, und ihre Tochter, Lorraine (Lennie) Copeland ^[1], ist als Schriftstellerin/Filmproduzentin tätig.

Biografie

Lorraine Copeland wurde als Elizabeth Lorraine Adie in Schottland geboren und ist die Tochter eines Neurochirurgen aus der Londoner City of Westminster. Lorraine wurde im Wycombe Abbey Internat in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, erzogen und arbeitete während des Zweiten Weltkriegs in der Special Operations Executive des Britischen Geheimdienstes.

Hier lernte sie ihren Ehemann Miles Copeland junior kennen, als er im Verlauf von Gegenspionage-Operationen des Office of Strategic Services (während Kriegszeiten operierte der CIA als „OSS“) in London stationiert war. Sie heirateten am 25. September 1942 in der St Mary's Church, Great Portland Street, London. Als ihr ältester Sohn, Miles Axe Copeland, am 2. Mai 1944 in London geboren wurde, stand die britische Hauptstadt unter dem Bombardement der nationalsozialistischen Vergeltungswaffen.

Nach 1945 zog die Familie nach Washington D.C.. Miles Copeland war an einigen 'bekannten' Operationen des CIA in leitender Funktion beteiligt, und seine Arbeit führte ihn als 'freier politischer Berater' in den Nahen Osten, mit wechselndem Wohnsitz in seinen Einsatzländern und in den USA – Stewart Copeland wurde am 16. Juli 1952 in Alexandria, Virginia, geboren. 1948 zogen die Copelands nach Damaskus (Syrien) – hier wurde am 25. April 1949 Ian Copeland geboren – 1953 nach Kairo und Ende der 1950er Jahre nach Beirut. Im Nahen Osten verbrachten die Copeland-Kinder ihre Jugend, lernten die Arabische Sprache und Kultur ^[2] kennen, und Lorraine Copeland entwickelte ihr Interesse an der Archäologie zum beruflichen Wirkungsfeld.

Feldforschung

Während der nachfolgenden 50 Jahre arbeitete Lorraine Copeland auf ihrem Fachgebiet. Sie wird im allgemeinen mit dem Institute of Archaeology des University College London und dem Maison de l’Orient et de la Méditerranée assoziiert.

Lorraine Copeland ist Autorin von zahlreichen Fachbüchern / Aufsätzen zur archäologischen Geschichte des Nahen Ostens, und alleine zu den Ausgrabungen zum Thema Halaf-Obed (siehe Ninive, Mesopotamien) hat Lorraine Copeland in Zusammenarbeit mit anderen ForscherInnen drei wissenschaftliche Schriften verfasst. Weitere Themenbereiche ihrer Forschungen sind Abri Bergy, Hannon, die neolithischen Siedlungen in der südlichen Bekaa-Ebene, Ksar Akil (Antelias), die Halaf-Kultur (Kupfersteinzeit), Ras el-Kelb im Libanon, und Forschungsprojekte in Syrien, Jordanien und in Nordafrika.
