Madison County[1] ist ein County im Bundesstaat Missouri der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika. Der Verwaltungssitz (County Seat) ist Fredericktown.

Geografie

Das County liegt im Südosten von Missouri, ist etwa 50 km vom Mississippi River, der Grenze zu Illinois entfernt und hat eine Fläche von 1289 Quadratkilometern, wovon 2 Quadratkilometer Wasserfläche sind. Es grenzt im Uhrzeigersinn an folgende Countys: St. Francois County, Perry County, Bollinger County, Wayne County und Iron County.

Geschichte

Madison County wurde 1818 gebildet. Benannt wurde es nach James Madison, dem vierten Präsidenten der Vereinigten Staaten.

Nach der Volkszählung von 2000 gab es in diesem County 11.800 Einwohner, 4.711 Haushalte und 3.330 Familien, die in dem County wohnten. Die Bevölkerungsdichte lag bei 9 Personen pro Quadratkilometer. Ethnisch betrachtet setzte sich die Bevölkerung zusammen aus 98,30 Prozent Weißen, 0,13 Prozent Afroamerikanern, 0,25 Prozent amerikanischen Ureinwohnern, 0,29 Prozent Asiaten und 0,20 Prozent aus anderen ethnischen Gruppen; 0,83 Prozent stammten von zwei oder mehr Ethnien ab. 0,56 Prozent der Bevölkerung waren spanischer oder lateinamerikanischer Abstammung.

Von den 4.711 Haushalten hatten 31,2 Prozent Kinder unter 18 Jahren, die im Haushalt lebten. 57,4 Prozent waren verheiratete, zusammenlebende Paare. 10,1 Prozent waren allein erziehende Mütter, 29,3 Prozent waren keine Familien. 25,9 Prozent aller Haushalte waren Single-Haushalte und in 14,3 Prozent lebten Menschen älter als 65 Jahre. Die Durchschnittshaushaltsgröße betrug 2,46 und die durchschnittliche Familiengröße war 2,93 Personen.

24,6 Prozent der Bevölkerung waren unter 18 Jahre alt, 7,9 Prozent zwischen 18 und 24, 26,3 Prozent zwischen 25 und 44, 23,3 Prozent zwischen 45 und 64, und 18,0 Prozent waren 65 Jahre alt oder älter. Das Durchschnittsalter betrug 39 Jahre. Auf 100 weibliche Personen aller Altersgruppen kamen 92,1 männliche Personen. Auf 100 Frauen im Alter von 18 Jahren und darüber kamen 87,7 Männer.

Das jährliche Durchschnittseinkommen eines Haushalts betrug 25.601 USD, das Durchschnittseinkommen einer Familie belief sich auf 31.145 USD. Männer hatten ein durchschnittliches Einkommen von 27.670 USD, Frauen 15.909 USD. Das Prokopfeinkommen betrug 13.215 USD. 17,2 Prozent der Bevölkerung und 12,8 Prozent der Familien leben unterhalb der Armutsgrenze. [5]

Madison County kommt im Originaltitel des Films Die Brücken am Fluss vor. Diese Brücken sollen durch ihre besondere, überdachte Bauweise berühmt sein.
