Die Noni-Bäume (Morinda) sind eine Pflanzengattung aus der Familie der Rötegewächse (Rubiaceae). Der bekannteste Vertreter der Gattung ist der Noni-Baum (Morinda citrifolia), aus dem ein als Gesundheitsprodukt aufwendig vermarkteter, bezüglich seiner gesundheitsfördernden Wirkung jedoch heftig umstrittener Saft („Noni-Saft“) gewonnen wird.

Verbreitung

Arten sind heute in den Tropen Asiens, Afrikas, Australiens und Amerikas verbreitet. Die größte Artenvielfalt weist die Gattung in Borneo, Neuguinea, Nordaustralien und Neukaledonien auf.

Beschreibung

Es sind Gehölze: Bäume, Sträucher oder Lianen. Die gestielten, meist gegenständigen Laubblätter sind mittelgroß bis sehr groß, einfach und oft ledrig. Nebenblätter sind vorhanden.

Die einfachen oder zusammengesetzten Blütenstände sind oft Dolden. Die duftenden Blüten sind zwittrig oder funktional männlich und drei- bis siebenzählig. Die Kelchblätter bleiben lange erhalten. Die Kronblätter sind weiß, cremefarben, gelb oder purpurfarben. Es ist nur ein Staubblattkreis aus vier bis sieben Staubblättern vorhanden. Zwei Fruchtblätter sind zu einem unterständigen Fruchtknoten verwachsen. Es wird eine Steinfrucht gebildet. Die Samen sind geflügelt.

Systematik

Die Gattung Morinda wurde vom schwedischen Naturforscher Carl von Linné – im Zuge der Erstbeschreibung der Arten Noni-Baum (Morinda citrifolia) und Morinda umbellata – in seinem 1753 erschienenen Werk Species Plantarum aufgestellt.[1] Es gibt mehrere Synonyme für die Gattung:[2]

Ethnobotanik

Die bekannteste Art ist der Noni-Baum (Morinda citrifolia), die zweitwichtigste Heilpflanze Hawaiis, die insbesondere Anthrachinone als wirksamen Bestandteil enthält.

Die afrikanischen Morinda-Arten Morinda lucida und Morinda umbellata werden ebenfalls naturheilkundlich, auch gegen Malaria eingesetzt. Wirksam scheinen dabei die enthaltenen Iridoid-Glykoside zu sein.

Die chinesische Art Morinda officinalis ist Teil der dortigen Ethnobotanik.
