North-Eastern (Nordost) ist eine Provinz Kenias. Ihre Hauptstadt ist Garissa. Früher war das im Norden an Äthiopien und im Osten an Somalia grenzende Gebiet als Northern Frontier District (NFD, Nördlicher Grenzdistrikt) bekannt.
Die etwa 1.762.370 Einwohner[1] leben mehrheitlich von der (nomadischen) Viehzucht und gehören kuschitischsprachigen Ethnien an, hauptsächlich den Somali (Clans der Darod und Hawiye) und daneben den Oromo. Befürworter eines „Groß-Somalia“ wollen die North-Eastern Province an Somalia angliedern[2]. Vorherrschende Religion in North-Eastern ist der Islam.
Seit Ausbruch des somalischen Bürgerkrieges im Nachbarland ist North-Eastern Standort von Flüchtlingslagern für somalische Flüchtlinge, insbesondere bei Dadaab. Auch die einheimische Bevölkerung ist mit den Folgen von Dürre und Überschwemmungen konfrontiert.
