Around the Sun ist das dreizehnte Studioalbum der US-amerikanischen Rockband R.E.M.. Es erschien am 4.Oktober 2004 und ist der Nachfolger des 2001 herausgebrachten Reveal. Nacheinander wurden aus Around the Sun die Singles Leaving New York, Aftermath, Electron Blue und Wanderlust veröffentlicht, die deutschen Singlecharts erreichten jedoch nur Leaving New York und Aftermath.

Wissenswertes

Das Album mit der Hitsingle Leaving New York knüpft an die Zeit von Automatic for the People (1992) und Reveal (2001) an. Es ist das 13. Studioalbum der Band und stieg bis auf Platz 13 der Billboard 200. Textlich ist es das politischste seit Document und befasst sich größtenteils mit der (Irak-)Politik des damaligen US-amerikanischen Präsidenten George W. Bush, deren Gegner Stipe und die anderen Bandmitglieder sind. Im Gegensatz zum großen Erfolg in Großbritannien war es das erste Studioalbum der Band, das die Top 10 der Charts in den USA nicht erreichte.

Kritik

Around the Sun erhielt nur mäßige Kritiken. Rezensator.de empfand das Album als durchschnittlich und spannungsarm^[1]. Mathias Möller von laut.de schrieb, dass das Album eingefleischte Fans spielerisch überzeuge, es eigne sich aber kaum, um eine neue R.E.M.-Begeisterung wie bei "Automatic for the People" zu generieren^[2].
