In the Wee Small Hours ist ein Konzeptalbum von Frank Sinatra aus dem Jahr 1955. Das Vocal-Jazz-Album gilt als eines der ersten Konzeptalben überhaupt.[1] Das Album setzte sich nach seinem Erscheinen an die Spitze der Billboard 200.[2]

Das Balladen-Album wurde von Nelson Riddle arrangiert und dirigiert; neben einer sparsam besetzten Rhythmusgruppe mit Piano, Celesta, Bass und Schlagzeug sind Streicher eingesetzt. Es gilt als eines der jazz-lastigsten Werke Sinatras. Die Lieder sind größtenteils melancholisch und traurig; sie wirken wie eine Verarbeitung der kurz vorher gescheiterten Ehe Sinatras mit der Schauspielerin Ava Gardner.[3]

Das titelgebende Lied In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning wurde seit der Veröffentlichung vielfach gecovert, so zum Beispiel von Johnny Hartman, Astrud Gilberto, Lou Rawls, Carly Simon, Art Blakey, Count Basie, Andy Williams, Wes Montgomery, Ruby Braff, Jamie Cullum und John Mayer.[4]

Aufnahme

Die Aufnahmen für das Album fanden am 8., 16., und 17. Februar sowie am 4. März 1955 statt, dem Albumtitel entsprechend in den frühen Morgenstunden. Ein ausgewähltes Publikum wohnte den Aufnahmen bei und sorgte für die gewünschte „Nachtclub-Atmosphäre“.[5]

Rezeption

In The Wee Small Hours wurde 1984 in die Grammy Hall of Fame aufgenommen.[7] Das Magazin Rolling Stone führte das Werk 2003 unter den 500 besten Alben aller Zeiten.[8] Ebenso gewürdigt wurde In The Wee Small Hours vom Time Magazine. Dort ist das Album in der Liste The ALL-TIME 100 Albums geführt.[9] Robert Dimery bespricht das Album an erster Stelle in seinem Buch 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.[4]
