Marc Schmitz

Marc Schmitz (* 1963 in Hamburg) ist ein deutscher Künstler, der in Berlin lebt und arbeitet.

Leben

Marc Schmitz arbeitet als Künstler und Kurator in den Medien Malerei, Installation, Objekt, Video (Preis der 10th Cairo Biennale 2007 für das Video C.Y.L.) und Land Art. Marc Schmitz studierte Philosophie an der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in München, und an der FU Berlin sowie freie Kunst (Multimedia) an der Kunstakademie München bei Klaus vom Bruch (2000) und (Multimedia) an der Akademie für Neue Medien in Berlin (2001). Seit der Teilnahme an der China Art Exposition International 1998 in Peking konzentriert sich seine Aktivität zunehmend auf asiatische Länder wie Japan (Michida City Museum Tokyo 2002) Korea (Busan Biennale 2004), Mongolei (FEEL FELT 2005) und China (BIAB 2nd Beijing Biennale 2005). Daneben kuratierte Marc Schmitz internationale Projekte wie beispielsweise Signs Efficiency and Wonders Berlin Beijing crossover 2000, Chaoyang Culture Center Peking, Transitory Operations, UMA Gallery Ulan Bator und Mongolia 360° 1st. Land Art Biennial 2010, in der Mongolian National Modern Art Gallery.

Zentrale Themen der künstlerischen Arbeit von Marc Schmitz sind Raum und Zeit. Das international fortlaufende Projekt Spaces untersucht die Wahrnehmung im Verhältnis des Raumes zum menschlichen Körper. In seiner Malerei dokumentieren Farb-Schichtungen die Prozesshaftigkeit der Zeit. Arbeiten des Künstlers wurden vielfach ausgezeichnet (1. Preis Art for Expo zur Weltausstellung Expo 2000 in Hannover) (Special Award Busan Biennale Committee, Korea 2004) u.a.m.

Artist Statement

..any typical space is constructed by typical social conditions. Every part of consciousness is included. Images of space are dreams of society..
My recent projects have focused on finding and interpreting unclaimed or contested public space(s), and on reading the importance of the spatial relationship to both personal and shared-cultural memory. The stories told in those contested spaces reveal alternate possibilities for the human experience – and particularly our experience of urban zones. My work is oriented toward the public realm, is collaborative more than it is ‘interactive,’ relies on ethnographic and art-historical research, and takes advantage of both contemporary and historical forms of artistic media.
