Der Cy Young Award

Der Cy Young Award ist eine jährlich an die besten Pitcher der Major Leagues vergebene Ehrung. Eingeführt wurde sie 1956, um den im Jahr zuvor verstorbenen Hall-of-Fame-Pitcher Cy Young zu ehren. Zuerst wurde die Auszeichnung nur an den besten Pitcher der gesamten Major Leagues vergeben, seit 1967 werden die Besten der National League und der American League separat geehrt.

Die Auszeichnung erfolgt nach einer Abstimmung in der Baseball Writers Association of America, bei der für jeden Verein jeweils zwei Journalisten stimmberechtigt sind (in der American League mit 14 Vereinen demnach 28 Stimmabgaben, in der National League bei 16 Teams entsprechend 32).[1] Auf den Stimmzetteln sind erste, zweite und dritte Plätze zu vermerken; für eine Erstplatzierung werden fünf Punkte vergeben, für zweite Plätze drei Punkte und für Drittnennungen ein Punkt. Sollten mehrere Spieler die gleiche Höchstpunktzahl erhalten, wird der Preis geteilt.
