Die Kansas City Royals wurden 1969 in Kansas City gegründet. Ihre Heimspiele trägt die Mannschaft im Kauffman Stadium aus. Sie ersetzten die zuvor nach Oakland, Kalifornien übergesiedelten Kansas City Athletics (A’s), die dort als Oakland Athletics vor allem in den 1970er Jahren mehrere Meisterschaften erringen konnten. Der größte Erfolg der Royals war der Gewinn der World Series 1985 gegen die St. Louis Cardinals.
