Airport Surveillance Radar (ASR) ist ein relativ kleines Radargerät zur Luftraumüberwachung. Diese Radargeräte mittlerer Reichweite werden von den Fluglotsen benötigt, um sämtliche Flugbewegungen rund um einen Flugplatz im Überblick zu behalten und den ständig wachsenden Flugverkehr auf eine sichere, ordentliche, schnelle Art sicherzustellen. Üblicherweise arbeiten die ASR mit Frequenzen im E-Band bis zu einer Reichweite von 60 Nautischen Meilen (ca. 111 km).
Wichtige Eigenschaft von ASR ist die Redundanz: alle Systeme müssen mehrfach vorhanden sein, um technische Ausfälle oder Defekte sofort kompensieren zu können.
Neuere ASR arbeiten digital und besitzen auch eine Wetterkanal-Option zur Darstellung von Wettererscheinungen in der näheren Umgebung des Flugplatzes.
