Gilbert Stork

Gilbert Stork (* 31. Dezember 1921 im belgischen Brüssel) ist ein US-amerikanischer Chemiker. Nach ihm ist die Stork-Reaktion benannt. Die American Chemical Society führt ihn als einen der 75 bedeutendsten Chemiker[1].

Gilbert Stork wurde am 31. Dezember 1921 in Brüssel geboren. 1939 wanderte er in die Vereinigten Staaten aus und machte seinen Bachelor of Sciences an der University of Florida. Im Jahr 1945 wurde er an der University of Wisconsin-Madison promoviert, sein Doktorvater war Samuel M. McElvain[2]. Von 1945 bis 1946 war er Senior Research Chemist in den Lakeside Laboratories[3] . Seine universitäre Laufbahn begann er 1946 als Instructor an der Harvard University und wurde 1948 Assistant Professor. 1953 wechselte er zur Columbia University und war dort Associate Professor. Im Jahr 1955 wurde er zum Professor ernannt. Von 1967 bis 1993 war er Eugene Higgins-Professor an der Columbia University. Gilbert Stork wurde 1993 emeritiert.[4]

Zu seinen akademischen Schülern zählen Eugene van Tamelen und Samuel J. Danishefsky.
