Alfonso Gesualdo

Alfonso Gesualdo (* 20. Oktober 1540 in Calitri bei Neapel; † 14. Februar 1603 in Neapel) war ein Kardinal der katholischen Kirche, ab 1572 der Titelkirche Santa Prisca, von 1578 bis zu seinem Tod Sant’Anastasia. Er war Mitglied der Kurie und Erzbischof von Conza (ab 1564), Bischof von Albano (1583), Bischof von Frascati (1587), Bischof von Porto e Santa Rufina (1589), Bischof von Ostia und später Erzbischof von Neapel (1596).

Papst Pius IV. ernannte ihn am 26. Februar 1561 zum Kardinal. Er war Dekan des Kardinalskollegiums. In dieser Funktion leitete er das Konklave von 1591, auf dem Papst Clemens VIII. erwählt wurde. Gesualdo war Patron von Sant'Andrea della Valle in Rom, der Mutterkirche des Theatinerordens. Alfonsos Bruder Fabricio, Fürst von Venosa, war ein Schwager von Kardinal Carlo Borromeo. Die Verbindung mit dem Geschlecht der Borromeo hatte für die Familie Gesualdo ein halbes Jahrhundert lang nachhaltige Bedeutung. Der Komponist Carlo Gesualdo war Alfonsos Neffe.
