Sir Henry Yule

Sir Henry Yule (* 1. Mai 1820 in Inveresk, Grafschaft Edinburgh, Schottland; † 30. Dezember 1880) war ein schottischer Orientalist.

Leben

Er wurde in Inveresk, Schottland, bei Edinburgh geboren, Sohn von Major William Yule (1764-1839), dem Übersetzer des Apothegms of Ali. Henry Yule erhielt seine Ausbildung in Edinburgh, Addiscombe und Chatham und kam früh (1840) als Ingenieuroffizier nach Bengalen. Er diente im Ersten Sikh-Krieg und Zweiten Sikh-Krieg, war Sekretär von Colonel (später Sir) Arthur Phayre's Einsatz in Ava (1855) und schrieb sein Narrative of the Mission to the Court of Ava (1858).

1862 setzte er sich im Rang eines Colonel zu Ruhe und widmete seine Freizeit der mittelalterlichen Geschichte und Geographie von Zentralasien. Er publizierte Cathay and the Way Thither (1866), das Buch Book of Marco Polo, wofür er die Goldmedaille der Royal Geographical Society erhielt. In Zusammenarbeit mit Dr. Arthur C. Burnell gab er das Werk Hobson-Jobson : A Glossary of Colloquial Anglo-Indian Words and Phrases, and of Kindred Terms, Etymological, Historical, Geographical and Discursive (1886) heraus, ein Wörterbuch der anglo-indischen umgangssprachlichen Phrasen.

Für die Hakluyt Society, deren Präsident er eine Zeit lang gewesen ist, gab er die Mirabilia descripta von Jordanus (1863) heraus und The Diary of William Hedges (1887-89). Das letztgenannte Werk enthält eine Biographie des Governor Pitt, des Großvaters von William Pitt, 1. Earl of Chatham. Von 1875 bis 1889 war Yule Mitglied des Council of India (Indischen Rats), er wurde bei seinem Eintritt in den Ruhestand zum Knight Commander of the Order of the Star of India ernannt. Yule trug als Ratgeber für orientalische Angelegenheiten mit zur Entstehung des Oxford English Dictionary bei.

Die Memoir seiner Tochter wurde der posthumen dritten Ausgabe seines Marco Polo (1903) vorangestellt.
