Lage der Region Lindi innerhalb Tansanias

Lindi ist eine der ärmsten der 26 Regionen Tansanias. Sie liegt zwischen Dar es Salaam und Mosambik. Etwa 832.000 Einwohner (Census 2002: 787.624, Wachstum: 1,4%) leben hier in den Distrikten Lindi (Urban/Rural), Kilwa, Nachingwea, Ruangwa und Liwale. Die Hauptstadt heißt ebenfalls Lindi und hat etwa 43.000 Einwohner. An der Küste von Lindi werden große Erdgasvorkommen vermutet. Auf der vorgelagerten Insel Songo Songo wird bereits mit der Ausbeutung begonnen.

Die Region war 1905-1907 Schauplatz des Maji-Maji-Aufstands gegen die deutsche Kolonialbesatzung.

Etwa 75 km nordwestlich der Hauptstadt befindet sich der Berg Tendaguru, eine weltbekannte Fossillagerstätte aus der Zeit des Oberjura, aus der zahlreiche Fossilien, insbesondere solche von Dinosauriern, geborgen wurden. Das von dort stammende Skelett eines Brachiosaurus brancai ist im Berliner Museum für Naturkunde ausgestellt und das größte aufgebaute Dinosaurierskelett der Welt.
