Das Madison County[1] ist ein County im Bundesstaat Georgia der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika. Der Verwaltungssitz (County Seat) ist Danielsville, benannt nach General Allen Daniel.

Geografie

Das County liegt nordnordöstlich des geographischen Zentrums von Georgia, ist im Südosten etwa 40 km von South Carolina entfernt und hat eine Fläche von 740 Quadratkilometern, wovon 4 Quadratkilometer Wasserflächen sind. Es grenzt im Uhrzeigersinn an folgende Countys: Hart County, Elbert County, Oglethorpe County, Clarke County, Jackson County, Banks County und Franklin County.

Geschichte

James Madison

Madison County wurde am 5. Dezember 1811 als 38. County in Georgia aus Teilen des Clarke County, des Elbert County, des Franklin County, des Jackson County und des Oglethorpe County gebildet. Benannt wurde es nach dem US-amerikanischen Präsidenten James Madison. Das Bild des Countys war bis in die 1930er Jahre geprägt von riesigen Baumwollplantagen in Monokultur. Auch heute noch steht die Landwirtschaft an erster Stelle.

Historische Objekte

In Colbert befindet sich das Colbert Historic District. Das Gebiet umfasst 43 Gebäude und grenzt sich ein zwischen den Straßen 4th & 5th Street sowie 4th & 8th Avenue. Das Distrikt wurde am 31. Mai 1984 vom National Register of Historic Places als historisches Monument mit der Nummer 84001154 aufgenommen.[2][3]

Nach der Volkszählung im Jahr 2000 lebten im Madison County 25.730 Menschen. Davon wohnten 158 Personen in Sammelunterkünften, die anderen Einwohner lebten in 9.800 Haushalten und 7.330 Familien. Die Bevölkerungsdichte betrug 35 Einwohner pro Quadratkilometer. Ethnisch betrachtet setzte sich die Bevölkerung zusammen aus 89,01 Prozent Weißen, 8,46 Prozent Afroamerikanern, 0,19 Prozent amerikanischen Ureinwohnern, 0,28 Prozent Asiaten, 0,03 Prozent Bewohnern aus dem pazifischen Inselraum und 1,03 Prozent aus anderen ethnischen Gruppen; 0,99 Prozent stammten von zwei oder mehr Ethnien ab. 1,97 Prozent der Gesamtbevölkerung waren spanischer oder lateinamerikanischer Abstammung.

Von den 9.800 Haushalten hatten 34,6 Prozent Kinder und Jugendliche unter 18 Jahren, die bei ihnen lebten. 60,6 Prozent waren verheiratete, zusammenlebende Paare, 10,6 Prozent waren allein erziehende Mütter und 25,2 Prozent waren keine Familien. 21,5 Prozent waren Singlehaushalte und in 8,0 Prozent lebten Menschen im Alter von 65 Jahren oder darüber. Die Durchschnittshaushaltsgröße betrug 2,61 und die durchschnittliche Familiengröße betrug 3,04 Personen.

26,3 Prozent der Bevölkerung waren unter 18 Jahre alt, 8,2 Prozent zwischen 18 und 24, 30,6 Prozent zwischen 25 und 44, 23,9 Prozent zwischen 45 und 64 und 11,0 Prozent waren 65 Jahre oder älter. Das Durchschnittsalter betrug 36 Jahre. Auf 100 weibliche Personen kamen statistisch 96,6 männliche Personen und auf 100 Frauen im Alter ab 18 Jahren kamen 93,7 Männer.

Das jährliche Durchschnittseinkommen eines Haushalts betrug 36.347 USD, das Durchschnittseinkommen der Familien 42.189 USD. Männer hatten ein Durchschnittseinkommen von 31.324 USD, Frauen 22.426 USD. Das Prokopfeinkommen betrug 16.998 USD. 9,2 Prozent der Familien und 11,6 Prozent der Bevölkerung lebten unterhalb der Armutsgrenze. [7]
