Die Rainbow Arts Software GmbH wurde 1984 in Gütersloh von Thomas Meiertoberens und Marc Alexander Ullrich gegründet und war als Entwickler und Publisher von Computerspielen tätig. Durch ihre C64- und Amiga-Spiele erreichten sie einen hohen Bekanntheitsgrad und wurden zu einem der größten deutschen Computerspielevertriebe.

Zu den beliebtesten Spielen, die unter Rainbow Arts vertrieben wurden, gehörten die in Europa populäre Turrican-Reihe, MadTV, Katakis und The Great Giana Sisters. Viele auch heute noch in der Computerspieleszene bekannte und tätige Persönlichkeiten, wie Armin Gessert, Manfred Trenz, Thomas Hertzler, Chris Hülsbeck, Boris Schneider und Teut Weidemann arbeiteten für Rainbow Arts. Der Firmensitz wurde später von Gütersloh nach Düsseldorf verlegt.[1]

Die Firmengründer trennten sich und in den frühen 1990er-Jahren wurde Rainbow Arts an die Softgold Computerspiele GmbH verkauft, die zur Rushware-Firmengruppe gehörte. Softgold wurde wiederum im Jahr 1999 von THQ aufgekauft. Der Name Rainbow Arts wurde ab diesem Zeitpunkt nicht mehr weitergeführt.

Bekannt wurde die Rainbow Arts Software GmbH unter anderem auch durch einen der ersten Prozesse zu der Frage, ob zwischen einem Softwarehaus und einem, von einem Studenten betriebenen, Bulletin Board System ein Wettbewerbsverhältnis besteht, so dass zeichenrechtliche Ansprüche durchsetzbar sind. Dies wurde vom Amtsgericht München bestätigt.[2] Die Rainbow Arts Software GmbH wurde in diesem Verfahren durch Rechtsanwalt Günter Freiherr von Gravenreuth vertreten. Diese Entscheidung führte zu einer erheblichen Verunsicherung der Mailbox-Szene.[3]

In den 90ern wurde Rainbow Arts von Softgold/Funsoft aufgekauft, nun Teil von THQ, da Funsoft selbst von THQ 1999 gekauft wurde.
