Brian Friel

Brian Friel (* 9. Januar 1929 in Omagh, Nordirland) ist ein irischer Dramatiker.

Friel lebte lange Zeit im nordirischen Derry City, bevor er 1967 in die Grafschaft Donegal in der Republik Irland zog.

Aus seiner Feder stammen zahlreiche Theaterstücke (oft zu spezifisch irischen Themen), die auch in andere Sprachen übersetzt wurden. Seine ersten (unveröffentlichten) Werke entstanden Ende der 1950er- und Anfang der 1960er-Jahre. Mit Philadelphia, ich bin da! (1964) gelang Friel der internationale Durchbruch.

Der katholische Friel gründete 1980 mit dem protestantischen Stephen Rea die "Field Day Theatre Company" in Derry, die der vom Nordirlandkonflikt betroffenen Stadt eine neue Grundlage für die gemeinsame kulturelle Identifikation von Katholiken und Protestanten geben wollte. Die erste Produktion der Field Day Theatre Company war die Uraufführung von Friels Sprachstörungen am 23. September 1980. Neben Stephen Rea gehörte auch Liam Neeson zur Besetzung.

1987 wurde Friel von Taoiseach Charles J. Haughey zum Senator im 18. Seanad Éireann nominiert.

Lughnasa – Zeit des Tanzes wurde 1998 mit Meryl Streep und Michael Gambon verfilmt. (Der deutsche Titel des Filmes lautet Tanz in die Freiheit.)
