Falmouth Road Race

Das Falmouth Road Race ist ein Straßenlauf in Falmouth im US-Bundesstaat Massachusetts und wird seit 1973 jährlich im August ausgetragen.

Die 7 Meilen (etwa 11,3 Kilometer) lange, hügelige Strecke führt von der Ortschaft Woods Hole entlang der Küste von Cape Cod nach Falmouth Heights. Das Rennen wurde von dem Barkeeper Tommy Leonard ins Leben gerufen. 1972 verfolgte er im Fernsehen Frank Shorters Olympiasieg im Marathonlauf und war davon so beeindruckt, dass er sich ein Rennen auf Cape Cod mit Shorters Beteiligung wünschte.

An der ersten Austragung des Falmouth Road Race 1973 nahmen etwa 100 Läufer teil. Im folgenden Jahr stieg die Teilnehmerzahl auf 445, und das Rennen wurde von dem damals noch relativ unbekannten Bill Rodgers gewonnen. 1975 ging Leonards Wunsch in Erfüllung, als Frank Shorter in Falmouth an den Start ging und siegte. Über die Jahre trugen sich zahlreiche namhafte Athleten in die Siegerliste ein, und die jährlichen Teilnehmerzahlen stiegen auf über 8000 Läufer.
