AMREF International – African Medical and Research Foundation (englisch für Afrikanische Stiftung für Gesundheit und Forschung) ist eine afrikanische Nichtregierungsorganisation zur Gesundheitsvorsorge mit Sitz in Nairobi, Kenia. Die Organisation wurde 1957 von Michael Wood gegründet. Ziel ist es, einen flächendeckenden Basisgesundheitsdienst in Ostafrika mit einheimischen Fachkräften zu ermöglichen.[1]

AMREF bezeichnet sich selbst als größte politisch unabhängige, internationale Non-Profit-Organisation im Bereich der Gesundheitsvorsorge in Afrika.

Weitere AMREF-Büros gibt es in Uganda, Tansania, Südafrika, Mosambik und Äthiopien.

Die Arbeitsschwerpunkte von AMREF sind:

AMREF will relevante und kostengünstige Wege für neue Projekte entwickeln, sie implementieren und evaluieren. Der Verein versucht durch eine enge Zusammenarbeit mit den Menschen vor Ort Projekte auch dann noch effektiv wirken zu lassen, wenn er sich selbst zurückgezogen hat. AMREF arbeitet mit Einzelpersonen, Familien, Kommunen, Regierungen und anderen Partnern zusammen und versucht dabei größtmöglichen Erfolg mit dem geringsten möglichen finanziellen Aufwand zu erzielen.

AMREF legt besonderen Wert auf die Ausbildung von einheimischen Mitarbeitern, um Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe zu leisten. Als einzige medizinische Organisation dieser Größenordnung beschäftigt der Verein in Afrika über 600 ständige Mitarbeiter, von denen 97 % Afrikaner sind.

AMREF und die im Verein organisierten Fliegenden Ärzte betreiben ca. 200 Funkstationen, ein gut ausgebautes Versorgungsnetz und betreuen über 70 entlegene Busch-Spitäler. Der Verein unterstützt zahlreiche international anerkannte und geförderte Projekte in den meisten Subsahara-Ländern.

Die Organisation erzielte im Jahr 2005 ein Spendenaufkommen von über 30 Millionen US-Dollar.

Zwölf Schwesternorganisationen arbeiten weltweit für AMREF, sogenannte National Offices in Österreich, Deutschland, Dänemark, Frankreich, Holland, Italien, Kanada, Monaco, Spanien, USA, Schweden und England.

Österreich

AMREF Austria ist eine Teilorganisation von AMREF – African Medical and Research Foundation und hat als Verein seinen Sitz in Salzburg (Österreich). Gegründet wurde das Büro 1992 von dem langjährig in Afrika tätigen österreichischen Arzt Walter Schmidjell.
