GameSpy ist eine weit verbreitete Softwaresammlung, die im Bereich der Multiplayer-Computerspiele eingesetzt wird. Außerdem ist GameSpy ein Online-Magazin für PC- und Videospiele. Sie wird von GameSpy Industries vertrieben, welche ein Teil des IGN-Netzwerks sind.

Bestandteile

Die GameSpy-Software besteht aus:

• GameSpy Arcade - Serversuchmaschine (Server Browser)
• GameSpy 3D - Serversuchmaschine (Server Browser)
• Roger Wilco - Voice-Chat-Tool

Funktion

Die Funktionsweise ist folgendermaßen: Der Benutzer wählt aus einer Liste das Computerspiel aus, das er spielen will, das Programm holt daraufhin eine Liste von Gameservern von einem GameSpy-Masterserver. Das Programm fragt die Gameserver nacheinander ab, um die Anzahl der Spieler und weitere Serverinfos zu holen und die Latenzzeit zu ermitteln (vgl. Ping).

Eine weitere Funktionalität ist das automatische Patchen von installierten Spielen.

Bestandteile

GameSpy Arcade

GameSpy Arcade ist der Hauptbestandteil der Softwaresammlung und unterstützt Ego-Shooter, Rollenspiele und Strategiespiele. Außerdem bietet es zu jedem Spiel Chatchannels und Gesellschaftsspiele wie Schach oder Monopoly an, letztere spielt man im Programm selbst. Es existiert eine kostenlose Trial-Version und eine kostenpflichtige Kaufversion.
