Alexander Cockburn

Alexander Claud Cockburn (* 6. Juni 1941 in Schottland) ist ein irischer Journalist, der seit 1973 in den USA arbeitet und lebt. Er ist Mitautor des politischen Newsletter CounterPunch. Cockburn schreibt weiterhin die Kolumne "Beat the Devil" für die US-amerikanische Zeitschrift The Nation und eine wöchentliche Kolumne für die Los Angeles Times. Er liefert darüber hinaus regelmäßig Beiträge für den Anderson Valley Advertiser und den News- und Meinungsblog LewRockwell.com.

Cockburn wurde in Schottland geboren und wuchs in Youghal im County Cork auf Irland auf. Er ist der Sohn des bekannten sozialistischen Autors und Journalists Claud Cockburn. Nach seinem Studium an der University of Oxford arbeitete er als Reporter und Kommentator in London. Nach dem Umzug in die USA schrieb er zahlreiche Beiträge für The New York Review of Books, Esquire, Harper’s und Andere . Bis 1983 war Cockburn Schreiber der Kolumne „Press Clips“ in The Village Voice wo er jedoch suspendiert wurde da er einen Zuschuss einer palästinensischen Organisation annahm ohne dies bekanntzugeben. Seitdem schreibt er weiterhin in Kolumnen für das Wall Street Journal, New York Press und New Statesman.

Cockburn hat zwei Brüder, Andrew Cockburn und Patrick Cockburn, die ebenfalls als Journalisten tätig sind. Seine Nichte ist die Schauspielerin Olivia Wilde, die Tochter seines Bruders Andrew.
