Das Orange County[1] ist ein County im Bundesstaat Florida der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika. Der Verwaltungssitz (County Seat) ist Orlando.

Geschichte

Das Mosquito County wurde am 29. Dezember 1824 aus Teilen des St. Johns County gebildet. 1845 wurde es in Orange County umbenannt, nach der Frucht, die hier angepflanzt wurde und durch deren Vermarktung sich die Menschen einen einfachen Wohlstand sicherten. Heute gibt es keine kommerziell betriebenen Orangenplantagen mehr im Orange County, allerdings noch einige Abpackbetriebe und weiterverarbeitende Betriebe, die die Orangen aus dem Süden Floridas beziehen.

Historische Objekte

  • Orlando beherbergt das historische Tinker Building. Es befindet sich dort auf Nummer 16 bis 18 der Pine Street, und wurde als nationales Denkmal aufgenommen (NRHP 80000957).

Geografie

Das County hat eine Fläche von 2601 Quadratkilometern, wovon 251 Quadratkilometer Wasserfläche sind. Es grenzt im Uhrzeigersinn an folgende Countys: Seminole County, Brevard County, Osceola County und Lake County.

Nach der Volkszählung im Jahr 2000 lebten im Orange County 896.344 Menschen in 336.286 Haushalten und 220.267 Familien. Die Bevölkerungsdichte betrug 381 Einwohner pro Quadratkilometer. Ethnisch betrachtet setzte sich die Bevölkerung zusammen aus 68,59 Prozent Weißen, 18,17 Prozent Afroamerikanern, 0,34 Prozent amerikanischen Ureinwohnern, 3,35 Prozent Asiaten, 0,09 Prozent Bewohnern aus dem pazifischen Inselraum und 6,01 Prozent aus anderen ethnischen Gruppen; 3,43 Prozent stammten von zwei oder mehr Ethnien ab. 28,78 Prozent der Gesamtbevölkerung waren spanischer oder lateinamerikanischer Abstammung.

Von den 336.286 Haushalten hatten 32,4 Prozent Kinder und Jugendliche unter 19 Jahre, die bei ihnen lebten. 47,0 Prozent waren verheiratete, zusammenlebende Paare, 13,7 Prozent waren allein erziehende Mütter und 34,5 Prozent waren keine Familien. 24,2 Prozent waren Singlehaushalte und in 6,5 Prozent lebten Menschen im Alter von 65 Jahren oder darüber. Die Durchschnittshaushaltsgröße betrug 2,61 und die durchschnittliche Familiengröße betrug 3,14 Personen.

25,3 Prozent der Bevölkerung waren unter 18 Jahre alt, 10,9 Prozent zwischen 18 und 24, 33,8 Prozent zwischen 25 und 44, 20,0 Prozent zwischen 45 und 64 und 10,0 Prozent der Bevölkerung war 65 Jahre oder älter. Das Durchschnittsalter betrug 33 Jahre. Auf 100 weibliche Personen kamen statistisch 98,0 männliche Personen und auf 100 Frauen im Alter von 18 Jahren oder darüber kamen 95,7 Männer.

Das jährliche Durchschnittseinkommen eines Haushalts betrug 41.311 US-Dollar, das Durchschnittseinkommen der Familien 47.159 USD. Männer hatten ein Durchschnittseinkommen von 32.053 USD, Frauen 25.402 USD. Das Pro-Kopf-Einkommen betrug 20.916 USD. 8,8 Prozent der Familien und 12,1 Prozent der Bevölkerung lebten unterhalb der Armutsgrenze. [5]
