Das Osceola County[1] ist ein County im Bundesstaat Florida der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika. Der Verwaltungssitz (County Seat) ist Kissimmee.

Geschichte

Das Osceola County wurde am 12. Mai 1887 aus Teilen des Brevard County gebildet. Benannt wurde es nach dem Indianerhäuptling Osceola. Sein Name bedeutet so viel wie Sänger des schwarzen Getränks.

Geografie

Das County hat eine Fläche von 3901 Quadratkilometern, wovon 478 Quadratkilometer Wasserfläche sind. Es grenzt im Uhrzeigersinn an folgende Countys: Brevard County, Indian River County, Okeechobee County, Polk County und Orange County.

Nach der Volkszählung im Jahr 2000 lebten im Osceola County 172.493 Menschen in 60.977 Haushalten und 45.062 Familien. Die Bevölkerungsdichte betrug 50 Einwohner pro Quadratkilometer. Ethnisch betrachtet setzte sich die Bevölkerung zusammen aus 77,20 Prozent Weißen, 7,36 Prozent Afroamerikanern, 0,46 Prozent amerikanischen Ureinwohnern, 2,20 Prozent Asiaten, 0,08 Prozent Bewohnern aus dem pazifischen Inselraum und 9,06 Prozent aus anderen ethnischen Gruppen; 3,63 Prozent stammten von zwei oder mehr Ethnien ab. 29,41 Prozent der Gesamtbevölkerung waren spanischer oder lateinamerikanischer Abstammung.

Von den 60.977 Haushalten hatten 36,4 Prozent Kinder und Jugendliche unter 19 Jahre, die bei ihnen lebten. 56,1 Prozent waren verheiratete, zusammenlebende Paare, 12,8 Prozent waren allein erziehende Mütter und 26,1 Prozent waren keine Familien. 19,1 Prozent waren Singlehaushalte und in 7,0 Prozent lebten Menschen im Alter von 65 Jahren oder darüber. Die Durchschnittshaushaltsgröße betrug 2,79 und die durchschnittliche Familiengröße betrug 3,18 Personen.

26,8 Prozent der Bevölkerung waren unter 18 Jahre alt, 9,3 Prozent zwischen 18 und 24, 31,0 Prozent zwischen 25 und 44, 21,6 Prozent zwischen 45 und 64 und 11,4 Prozent der Bevölkerung war 65 Jahre oder älter. Das Durchschnittsalter betrug 35 Jahre. Auf 100 weibliche Personen kamen statistisch 97,2 männliche Personen und auf 100 Frauen im Alter von 18 Jahren oder darüber kamen 94,2 Männer.

Das jährliche Durchschnittseinkommen eines Haushalts betrug 38.214 US-Dollar, das Durchschnittseinkommen der Familien 42.061 USD. Männer hatten ein Durchschnittseinkommen von 29.034 USD, Frauen 21.746 USD. Das Pro-Kopf-Einkommen betrug 17.022 USD. 9,1 Prozent der Familien und 11,5 Prozent der Bevölkerung lebten unterhalb der Armutsgrenze.[4]
