Richard Austen Butler, Baron Butler of Saffron Walden, KG, CH, PC (* 9. Dezember 1902 in Attock Serai, Britisch-Indien; † 8. März 1982 in Great Yeldham, Essex), bekannt als Rab Butler war ein britischer konservativer Politiker.
Karriere
Butler war von 1929 bis 1965 Mitglied des House of Commons. Von 1951 bis 1955 war er Schatzkanzler, von 1957 bis 1962 Innenminister und 1963/1964 Außenminister. Er ist somit einer von nur drei britischen Politikern, welche diese drei Ämter bekleidet haben. Zwischenzeitlich war er von 1955 bis 1959 Lordsiegelbewahrer. 1959 bis 1961 war er außerdem Vorsitzender der Konservativen Partei.
Dem House of Lords gehörte er seit 1965 an, als er als Baron Butler of Saffron Walden zum Life Peer erhoben wurde, nachdem er zuvor einen erblichen Adelstitel abgelehnt hatte. Von 1966 bis 1982 war er erster Kanzler der University of Essex.
1957 und 1963 war er als möglicher Premierminister im Gespräch, unterlag jedoch im innerparteilichen Wettbewerb gegen Harold Macmillan bzw. Alec Douglas-Home.
