Der Twin Cities Marathon (kurz TCM) ist ein Marathon, der seit 1982 zwischen den so genannten Twin Cities Minneapolis und Saint Paul ausgetragen wird. Organisiert wird die Veranstaltung, die in der Regel Anfang Oktober stattfindet, von der Non-Profit-Organisation Twin Cities In Motion. Zum Programm gehören auch Läufe über 10 Meilen sowie über 5 und 10 km.

Geschichte

1963 rief die Minnesota Distance Running Association in Minneapolis den Land of Lakes Marathon ins Leben, der 1976 in City of Lakes Marathon umbenannt wurde. Nachdem 1981 auch in der Nachbarstadt ein St. Paul Marathon genannter Lauf auf die Beine gestellt worden war, bündelten im Jahr darauf Verantwortliche beider Rennen ihre Kräfte, um die beiden konkurrierenden Veranstaltungen durch eine neue zu ersetzen, die beide Städte miteinander verband. Mit 4563 Einschreibungen war der Twin Cities Marathon die bis dahin erfolgreichste Premiere eines Marathons in den Vereinigten Staaten.[1]

Strecke

Die Strecke führt unter anderem am Lake Calhoun vorbei.

Der Kurs startet am Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis und verläuft zunächst Richtung Süden vorbei an den Seen Lake of the Isles, Lake Calhoun und Lake Harriet und danach um den Lake Nokomis nach Osten. Nach ungefähr 24 Kilometern erreichen die Läufer den Mississippi River, entlang dessen Ufer die Strecke Richtung Norden führt, bevor sie den Fluss etwa bei Kilometer 30 überqueren. Der Kurs verläuft auf der anderen Flussseite noch etwa 3 Kilometer in südlicher Richtung weiter entlang des Ufers und wendet sich dann nach Osten. In der Folge ist bis knapp einen Kilometer ein stetiger Anstieg zu bewältigen, bis schließlich das Ziel am Minnesota State Capitol in Saint Paul erreicht wird.

Wegen der Verbindung aus Stadtkulisse und Seenlandschaft nennt der Veranstalter den Lauf auch The Most Beautiful Urban Marathon in America.
