Die Bahngesellschaft Malawi Rail - seit der Privatisierung 1999 und somit der eigentumsrechtlichen Verknüpfung mit Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique Central East African Railways - verfügt über ein in Schienennetz von 797 km in Kapspur. Fast alle Strecken sind eingleisig und für Achslasten von 15 t ausgebaut. Malawi Rail verfügte 1984 über 53 Diesellokomotiven, 41 Personenwagen (afrikanischer Standard) und 888 Güterwagen unterschiedlicher Art. Für das Jahr 2006 werden von Central East African Railways 24 Lokomotiven und 439 Waggons angegeben. Die Differenz muss dem Bürgerkrieg in Mosambik zugeschrieben werden, da in Beira viele Lokomotiven und Waggons festsaßen, weil die Eisenbahnbrücke bei Sena von der RENAMO gesprengt worden war.

Die Strecken von Malawi Rail liegen alle in der südlichen Hälfte des Landes. Die Linie beginnt (faktisch) in Chipata/Zambia, durchquert ein Hochplateau (1.200 m), erreicht die Hauptstadt Lilongwe, führt dann talwärts nach Chipoka am Malawisee (474 m) zum Hafen und weiter nach Nkaya. Dort zweigt eine Strecke nach Nayuchi (Grenze) und weiter zum mosambikanischen Tiefseehafen Nacala ab. Die andere Strecke führt über Blantyre, Bangula, Nsanje und von der Grenze weiter zum mosambikanischen Hafen Beira. Von dort aus können die Streckennetze von National Railways of Zimbabwe, Spoornet, TransNamib, Botswana Railways, Swazi Rail, Zambia Rail, TAZARA und die Benguelabahn erreicht werden.

Das Eisenbahnnetz von Malawi diente wiederholt als Begründung mosambikanischer Ansprüche auf Malawi. Es heißt, Malawi schneide mit seinen willkürlichen Kolonialgrenzen das mosambikanische Eisenbahnnetz in zwei Teile. Allerdings baute Malawi mit kanadischer Entwicklungshilfe in den 1970er Jahren die 170 km-Verbindung zwischen Nkaya und Cuamba an der mosambikanischen Strecke Nacala-Lichinga (Vila Cabral) überhaupt erst, um den mosambikanischen Tiefseehafen Nacala (Containerumschlag) erreichen zu können.

Das Schienennetz von Malawi Rail gehört zu den besten in Afrika. Die Wartung ist regelmäßig. Malawi Rail wurde am 1. Dezember 1999 privatisiert und wird von der Railroad Development Corporation in Pittsburgh, USA, betrieben, die verschiedene kurze Strecken in mehreren Ländern betreibt. Die Anschlüsse von Malawi Rail zu anderen Bahnsystemen sollen durch ein SADC-Prokjekt von Chipata zur TAZARA erweitert, die Sena-Linie der CMF-Zentral von Moatize über Mwanza nach Blantyre weitergebaut und von Nayuchi bis Nacala grunderneuert werden. Dafür wurde ein Konsortium gebildet, das den Ausbau grenzüberschreitend vorantreiben soll. Sobald dies Ziel erreicht ist, dürfte Central East African Railways wieder Malawi Rail heißen.
