South of the Border ist ein Dokumentarfilm aus dem Jahr 2009 von Oliver Stone. Der Film besteht hauptsächlich aus Interviews mit lateinamerikanischen Regierungschefs. Darunter die Präsidenten Hugo Chávez (Venezuela), Evo Morales (Bolivien), Cristina Kirchner (Argentinien), Rafael Correa (Ecuador), Raúl Castro (Kuba), Fernando Lugo (Paraguay) und Lula da Silva (Brasilien). Erstmalig wurde die Dokumentation bei den 66. Internationalen Filmfestspiele von Venedig 2009 gezeigt. Drehbuchautor war Tariq Ali, der den Film als "politisches Roadmovie" bezeichnet.[1] Der Ökonom Mark Weisbrot trug zu dem Film bei.

Stone über Chávez und South of the Border

"Hugo Chávez ist kein Caudillo, kein Diktator. Er ist ein demokratisch gewählter Präsident, der viermal in seinem Amt bestätigt wurde und ein Referendum gegen seine Amtsenthebung gewann . . . "South of the Border" war auch nicht als Film über Chávez an sich geplant, eher als ein Angriff auf die amerikanischen Medien, die diesen Mann dämonisieren. Chávez hat enorm viel für sein Land erreicht. Er hat das Wohlstandsniveau gehoben, das Bildungs- und Gesundheitssystem verbessert - also beschloss ich, die positiven Seiten seiner Amtszeit zu zeigen, anstatt nur die US-Berichterstatter bloßzustellen. Und dann erweiterte ich das Spektrum und sprach mit sieben Präsidenten Lateinamerikas, unter ihnen Lula, Cristina und Nestor Kirchner, Evo Morales, Raúl Castro . . . Mein Herz gehört nun mal den Underdogs. Sie alle verkörpern die moderne Revolution, die sich gegen die wirtschaftliche Abhängigkeit von den USA richtet. Fidel Castro war letztlich ein Großvater dieser Bewegung."[2]
