Der Name des County bezieht sich auf das kleine Dorf Louth bzw. den keltischen Gott Lugh (irisch: Lughbhadh).

Geografie
Die Grafschaft umfasst die Carlingford Peninsula, die zwischen dem Carlingford und der Dundalk Bay liegt, sowie die eiszeitliche Küstenebene südwestlich davon. Die höchste Erhebung ist der Carlingford Mountain mit 587 Metern. Mit 832 Quadratkilometern ist Louth die flächenmäßig kleinste der historischen irischen Grafschaften.
Geschichte
Louth nimmt an der vorgeschichtlichen Entwicklung Irlands teil, ist aber eine durch Mythen und Legenden besonders herausgehobene Grafschaft. Im Táin Bó Cúailnge wird sie mit dem "Rinderraub von Cooley" und dem Sieg des mythologischen Helden Cúchulainn in Verbindung gebracht. Die Bezeichnung Carlingford deutet durch den Suffix "ford" (wie bei Waterford und Wexford, von nordisch Fjord) auf die Anwesenheit von Wikingern hin. Im frühen 14. Jahrhundert wird die schottische Armee von Edward the Bruce (Bruder von König Robert I.) von Schottland bei Faughart in der Nähe von Dundalk besiegt. Edward verliert sein Leben. Im Jahr 1649 zerstört Oliver Cromwell die Garnison der Royalisten in Drogheda. Beachtliche neue Bodenfunde wurden im Zusammenhang mit dem Bau der Autobahn M1 gemacht.
Wirtschaft
Die Wirtschaft konzentriert sich in den Hafenstädten Dundalk und Drogheda. Das Land wird hauptsächlich für den Anbau von Gerste, Weizen, Hafer und Kartoffeln genutzt.
Politik
Louth entsendet vier Abgeordnete in das irische Parlament (Dáil Éireann). Die letzte Wahl fand im Februar 2011 statt.
