Heriot-Watt University Gründung 1821 Trägerschaft staatlich Ort Edinburgh, Vereinigtes Königreich Kanzlerin Susan Greenfield Studenten 10.225 (2007) Mitarbeiter 717 (2007) Website www.hw.ac.uk Die Heriot-Watt University im schottischen Edinburgh ist eine von drei großen Edinburgher Universitäten (neben Universität Edinburgh, Edinburgh Napier University) und ging aus der 1821 gegründeten „School of Arts of Edinburgh“ hervor, die als eine Art Fachhochschule technischer Ausrichtung bzw. Polytechnikum begann . Den Universitätsstatus erhielt sie 1966. Ursprünglich im Zentrum von Edinburgh gelegen, gibt es nun vier Campus-Bereiche. Der Haupt-Campus liegt im Stadtteil Riccarton des Currie-Bezirks am südwestlichen Rand der City (20 Autominuten von der City und 6 Minuten vom Flughafen) im Grünen, wohin die Universität seit 1971 schrittweise umsiedelte. Ableger sind der „Scottish Border Campus“ (vorher Scottish College of Textiles) in Galashiels, das International Centre for Island Technologiy (ICIT) in Stromness auf den Orkney-Inseln (als Teil des Instituts für Erdöltechnologie) und ab 2006 ein Ableger in Dubai (Heriot-Watt University Dubai).
Die Universität ist nach dem Erfinder der Dampfmaschine James Watt und George Heriot, einem Juwelier, Philanthropen und Bankier von König Jakob I. (England) aus dem 16. Jahrhundert, benannt. Der Name Watt kam schon 1852 in den Namen der Universität, ab 1885 hieß es „Heriot Watt College“. Ab 1869 waren auch Frauen zugelassen.
2006/7 hatte die Universität 7000 Studenten in Schottland (insgesamt mit Fernkursen oder über angeschlossene Partnereinrichtungen 17700), wovon ein Viertel Ausländer waren.
Angegliedert ist die Edinburgh Business School, die auch ein umfangreiches Fernstudienprogramm hat.
Kanzlerin ist seit 2006 die Neurowissenschaftlerin Susan Greenfield.
