Die Einrichtungen befinden sich in den Stadtteilen Stratford, Barking und in den Docklands direkt am Royal Albert Dock. Die Universität gilt als modern und hat viele internationale Kooperationen. Es waren im Jahr 2011 ca. 28.000 Studenten immatrikuliert.
Die Universität hat den Status als solche erst seit 1992, nachdem technische Hochschulen durch eine Gesetzesänderung in den Rang einer Universität erhoben wurden. Gegründet wurde sie 1970 als North East London Polytechnic und änderte ihren Namen später in Polytechnic of East London.
