Geschichte
Die Universität wurde 1946 als College of Aeronautics auf dem Luftwaffenstützpunkt der Royal Air Force in Cranfield, 75 km nord-westlich von London, gegründet. 1969 wurde das Cranfield Institute of Technology gegründet, später wurden die National College of Agricultural Engineering in Silsoe und die Royal Military College of Science (RMCS) eingegliedert. Seit 1993 trägt die Universität die offizielle Bezeichnung Cranfield University.
Die Universität ist die einzige im Vereinigten Königreich, die einen eigenen Flugplatz mit einer 1800 Meter langen Landebahn hat. Der Flugplatz dient der Studienrichtung Luft- und Raumfahrt.
Organisation
Die Universität bietet ausschließlich Aufbaustudiengänge, postgraduale Weiterbildungen sowie Forschung und Lehre an. 2006 waren ca. 3.000 Studenten eingeschrieben. Die Hochschule ist akkreditiert nach EQUIS, AACSB und AMBA. Cranfield hat ein weltweites Alumni-Netzwerk von über 10.000 Mitgliedern. Derzeitiger Rektor ist Sir John O'Reilly.
