Die Universität wurde 1823 als Liverpool Mechanics' School of Arts gegründet. 1992 erfolgte die heutige Namensgebung Liverpool John Moores University. Namensgeber ist der Kaufmann John Moores.
Angesiedelt ist die Hochschule auf dem City Campus im Zentrum Liverpools sowie auf dem IM Marsh Campus in Aigburth und dem Mount Pleasant Campus am Rande von Liverpool. Chancellor ist Dr. Brian May, der Gitarrist der Rockgruppe Queen, Vice-Chancellor ist Prof. Michael Brown.
Im Studienjahr 2006/2007 sind circa 28.500 Studenten eingeschrieben, davon circa 4.000 in postgradualen Studienprogrammen. Über 1.000 Professoren, Dozenten und Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiter lehren und forschen in sechs Fakultäten:
