Screwball

Screwball-Comedy bezeichnet eine spezielle Unterart der Filmkomödie Hollywoods, die ihren Höhepunkt von Mitte der 1930er bis Anfang der 1940er Jahre erlebte. Der englische Slang-Ausdruck „Screwball“ beschreibt eine Person mit eigenartigen bzw. skurrilen Angewohnheiten.

Eigenschaften der Screwball-Comedy

Die so betitelten Beziehungskomödien thematisieren häufig den Krieg der Geschlechter und zeichnen sich im Idealfall durch hohe Dialoglastigkeit, Wortwitz, ein rasantes Tempo und eine raffiniert konstruierte Handlung aus. Das Genre bewegt sich oft an der Grenze zur Farce und greift durchaus auch visuelle Slapstick-Anleihen aus der Stummfilmzeit auf.

Die Protagonisten stammen normalerweise aus gutem Hause (teilen somit nicht die finanziellen Nöte ihres damaligen Publikums) und stehen sich zunächst als Antagonisten gegenüber, um schließlich, nach Überwindung vieler Hindernisse, als Paar zu enden. Die selbstbewusste und intelligente weibliche Hauptperson agiert dabei in der Regel dem Mann überlegen.

Bereits in frühen Filmen des Genres sind für die Zeit ungewöhnlich freizügige, oft sexuelle Anspielungen enthalten. Die Beschränkung auf Andeutungen und zweideutige Wortspiele ist auf den Anfang der 1930er Jahre in Hollywood eingeführten Hays Code zurückzuführen, einen strengen Produktionskodex, der die direkte Behandlung von heiklen Themen wie Ehebruch, Prostitution etc. verbot und ab 1934 verpflichtend war.

Stilbildend für die Screwball-Comedy waren zwei Filme aus dem Jahr 1934, Howard Hawks' Verfilmung des Broadway-Hits Napoleon vom Broadway (engl. Twentieth Century) mit John Barrymore und Carole Lombard sowie vor allem Frank Capras Klassiker Es geschah in einer Nacht (engl. It Happened One Night) mit Claudette Colbert und Clark Gable. In der Rückschau lassen sich dem Genre aber auch ältere Filme, z.  B. von Lubitsch, hinzurechnen.

Auch jüngere Komödien, die von den gängigen Filmklischees abweichen und besonders intelligent und clever daherkommen, werden mitunter ebenfalls als Screwball-Comedy bezeichnet. Merkmale des Genres werden heute besonders gern in Fernsehserien (z.  B. Bewitched, Das Model und der Schnüffler oder Sex and the City) verwendet.
