Professor James Anders, ein US-Amerikaner, arbeitete 30 Jahre als Englischlehrer in Rio de Janeiro. Nach seiner Pensionierung plant er einen spektakulären Diamantenraub aus einem Bankgebäude, welches seiner Schule in Rio genau gegenüberliegt und er in all den Jahren in Ruhe ausspionieren konnte. Anders bittet seinen Jugendfreund Mark Milford, der mittlerweile in New York ein Oberhaupt in der organisierten Kriminalität ist, ihm vier Männer zu empfehlen, die den Coup, der während des Karneval in Rio stattfinden muss, durchführen sollen. Jeder der vier ist Experte auf seinem Gebiet: ein Safeknacker, ein Elektronikfachmann, ein Militärangehöriger mit Killerambitionen und ein Playboy, welcher sich an eine Angestellte der Bank heranmachen soll, um ihr unbemerkt einen Schlüssel zum Tresorraum abzunehmen. Die Vorbereitungen finden im Stil eines klassischen Heist-Movie statt. Unter vielen Schwierigkeiten gelingt der Einbruch wie geplant, doch danach gibt es eine Überraschung.
